UnionA Brigantine sailing ship of about 40 m in length, two-masted and square rigged. These ships were much in use during the 18th and 19th century as merchant ships and light warships and served very well as coast guards for shorter trips. Most of them were privateers. Merchant ships which had been armed and equipped as vessels of war by particular merchants, were furnished with state commissions to cruise against and antagonize the enemy by taking, sinking or burning their ships.
