Sopwith Camel 2F.1 - Keith Schevling - Birmingham, AL
2007KB
The final production version of the Camel was the 2F.1; a shipboard fighter with slightly reduced, jettisonable steel-tube landing gear and detachable rear fuselage (for compact carrier stowage). At the time of the Armistice the Royal Air force (newly formed from the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service) had some 129 2F.1 Camels on charge, 112 of which were with the Grand Fleet. As well as being flown from the aircraft carriers HMS Furious and HMS Pegasus, they were catapulted from platforms erected on the gun turrets and forecastles of many other war ships. This color scheme resembles a Sopwith-built Camel 2F.1 with A Flight, No 10 (Naval) Squadron, RNAS, at Treizennes. This unit became N0 210 Squadron, RAF, on April 1, 1918.
